The Emperor Jones was first staged on November 1, 1920, by the Provincetown Players at the Provincetown Playhouse in New York City. Charles Sidney Gilpin, a respected leading man from the all-black Lafayette Players of Harlem, was the first actor to play the role of Brutus Jones on stage. They did have some conflict over Gilpin's tendency to change O'Neill's use of the word "nigger" to Negro and colored in the course of the play. This production was O'Neill's first real smash hit. The Players' small theater was too small to cope with audience demand for tickets, and the play was transferred to another theater. It ran for 204 performances and was hugely popular, touring in the States with this cast for the next two years. (plus)

The Emperor Jones a été mis en scène le 1er novembre 1920 par les Provincetown Players au Provincetown Playhouse de New York. Charles Sidney Gilpin, le chef respecté de la troupe Lafayette Players of Harlem, a été le premier acteur à jouer le rôle de Brutus Jones sur scène.
Un conflit est né au sujet de la tendance de Gilpin à changer le mot «Nègre » en «Noir» ou «De couleur» dans la pièce. Cette production fut le premier succès de Eugene O’Neill. Le petit théâtre des Lafayette Players of Harlem étant trop petit pour faire face à la demande du public, la pièce a été transférée dans un autre théâtre. Il s'est joué durant 204 représentations et a été très populaire. Il est parti en US Tour avec cette distribution pour les deux prochaines années. (plus)

Every time these three are gathered together, the Princess Theatre is sold out for months in advance. ... You can get a seat at the Princess, somewhere along around the middle of August, for just about the price of one on the stock exchange. ... Wodehouse and Bolton and Kern are my favorite indoor sport, anyway. I like the way they go about a musical comedy. ... I like the way the action slides casually into the songs. ... I like the deft rhyming of the song that is always sung in the last act, by two comedians and one comedienne. And oh, how do I like Jerome Kern's music – those nice, soft, polite little tunes that always make me wish I'd been a better girl. And all these things are even more so in Oh, Lady!
